Research suggests that ownership of dogs and cats can support favourable psychological development in children, especially where there are suitable adult role models. Yet, small mammals, and other taxa, are increasingly chosen as children’s pets. They require less space, time and money - important considerations, especially for families with no garden access. However, this may not mean that children and small pets are a match made in heaven.

In this session we will explore ways to help children and their animals benefit from each other throughout the whole of the animal’s life, which can span several developmental phases of the child.
