Role of Veterinary Physiotherapy in rabbits & other non-traditional patients

Veterinary physiotherapy treatment protocols were historically developed for use in the human model, with their continued development and application in traditional companion animals, facilitating many of the same modalities and approaches in the animal model. However, there is many factors that begin to present, and impact our clinical assessment and management of non-traditional patients such as rabbits. Aspects as natural history, physiology and behaviour can mean that it is important to have a sound knowledge of not only physiotherapeutic techniques, but of the species and its care. We will review the importance of an ethical approach in rehabilitation, and how many fundamental factors in their specialist care must be considered in our case management. As well as the relevance of physiotherapy in these species that quite often have numerous compounding factors that heighten their risk for musculoskeletal pathology.
