Nutritional modulation can be used to treat, prevent and manage disease. This includes increased or decreased amounts of nutrients (both macronutrients and micronutrients), changes in the type of ingredients (e.g., use of hydrolysed proteins) and use of nutritional supplements (e.g., fish oils). Some modifications, however, can be harmful in certain scenarios (e.g., protein restriction in immature animals). Finally, it is important to understand the scientific evidence behind any nutritional recommendations made, both where there is strong scientific evidence based on well-designed studies, as well as when the scientific evidence is lacking (e.g., nutritional modifications based on physiological principles).
